Background
Merozoite surface proteins are high-priority candidate vaccine antigens as they are prime targets of the humoral immune response, of all such proteins, Merozoite Surface Protein 1 (MSP-1) is the most abundant, is essential for Plasmodium development and is proposed to have a role in early erythrocyte attachment, invasion, and egress. MSP-1 interactions with red cell proteins to facilitate these roles have been well-characterized.
