Phosphatidylglucoside is a unique glyco-glycerophospholipid that is found in both bacterial and mammalian cells. The discovery of phosphatidylglucoside in mammalian cells is relatively recent. Chemical structural analysis of the phosphatidylglucoside found in mammalian organs and cultured cells showed that phosphatidylglucoside is composed exclusively of a single pair of saturated fatty acid chains; the sn-1 chain is stearic acid and the sn-2 chain is arachidic acid phosphatidylglucoside forms distinct domains, which are different from cholesterol-based sphingolipid domains, on the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane.
