Target

  • Alternative Names
  • Anthrax protective antigen; PA
  • Long Name
  • Anthrax protective antigen
  • Function
  • The gene for the protective antigen (PA) of anthrax toxin is pagA. However, "protective antigen" typically refers to the protein itself, not just the gene.
The Protective Antigen (PA) is a crucial component of the anthrax toxin produced by Bacillus anthracis. Its primary function is to facilitate the entry of the toxin's enzymatic components, Lethal Factor (LF) and Edema Factor (EF), into host cells. PA first binds to cell surface receptors and is then cleaved by a host protease. The resulting fragment oligomerizes to form a heptameric or octameric ring structure on the cell surface. This ring then binds LF and/or EF. The entire complex is internalized by endocytosis. Within the acidic environment of the endosome, PA undergoes a conformational change to form a transmembrane pore, allowing LF and EF to translocate into the host cell cytosol, where they exert their toxic effects. Without PA, LF and EF cannot enter cells and are non-toxic.
