Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains continue to be the most important cause of diarrhea in neonatal and postweaning pigs. ETEC diarrhea causes weight loss, slow growth, and death and results in substantial economic losses to swine producers worldwide. The key virulence factors of ETEC in diarrhea are bacterial fimbriae and enterotoxins. Fimbriae mediate ETEC bacteria for attachment to porcine small intestinal epithelial cells and subsequent colonization, whereas enterotoxins disrupt fluid homeostasis in host small intestinal epithelial cells to cause fluid and electrolyte hypersecretion that leads to diarrhea.
