Background
L3MBTL1 is a human protein located on chromosome 20q12. It's a close relative, or homolog, of the Drosophila l(3)mbt protein and belongs to the malignant brain tumor (MBT) protein family.
This complex molecule plays a direct role in compacting chromatin, a process that is strictly dependent on histone methylation. L3MBTL1 functions as a transcriptional repressor, meaning it helps turn genes off. This repressive activity requires its three specialized MBT domains, which are predicted to bind to methylated lysines on histones.
