Big ET-1, the precursor of ET-1, is a peptide of 38 amino acids, which is cleaved by ET converting enzyme-1 (ECE-1). It has been reported that plasma big ET-1 has longer half-life and easier to be detected. Moreover, emerging evidence suggested that big ET-1 is a more accurate indicator of the degree of activation of the endothelial system. So it has been more widely used than ET-1 in most clinical researches.
