CD55, also known as decay-accelerating factor (DAF), is a membrane-bound protein that regulates complement activation. It prevents the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC) by inhibiting the C3 and C5 convertases of the complement system. This protects host cells from damage due to complement-mediated lysis. Deficiencies in CD55 can lead to complement-mediated diseases like paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.
