CR2 is a gene encoding a receptor that plays a significant role in B cell activation and immune responses. It is part of the complement receptor family and binds to complement component C3d. CR2 is expressed primarily on B cells, as well as on some T cells and dendritic cells. It helps in the activation of B cells upon antigen binding and is crucial for the proper functioning of the adaptive immune system. Defects in CR2 may impair immune response and contribute to autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
