ERBB2p185 is a member of the ErbB receptor tyrosine kinase family, which is critically involved in cell signaling pathways that regulate cell proliferation and differentiation. The ERBB2 gene, located on chromosome 17, encodes a protein known as p185HER2/neu, which is a receptor that is often overexpressed in certain cancers, most notably breast, ovarian, and lung cancers. The overexpression of p185HER2/neu is associated with aggressive tumor behavior, poor prognosis, and resistance to certain therapies.
