The G250 antigen appears at malignant transformation and stains positive in about 95% of renal cell carcinoma specimens as well as in most renal cell carcinoma metastases. G250 was cloned and its gene was located on chromosomes 9p12 to 13.
This gene encodes a glycoprotein involved in the regulation of the complement cascade. Binding of the encoded protein to complement proteins accelerates their decay, thereby disrupting the cascade and preventing damage to host cells.
