Plasmodium falciparum is a protozoan parasite that causes the most severe form of malaria in humans. The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is a major surface protein of P. falciparum sporozoites, the infective stage of the parasite that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. CSP plays a crucial role in the invasion of host hepatocytes, where the parasite undergoes exponential growth and multiplication before entering the bloodstream and causing symptoms of malaria. Due to its role in the Infectious process, CSP has been a key target for vaccine development against P. falciparum malaria.
