Background
TSST-1 stands for Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxin-1. It is a protein exotoxin produced by certain strains of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. TSST-1 is the primary causative agent of menstrual Toxic Shock Syndrome (mTSS) and is implicated in about half of the non-menstrual TSS (nmTSS) cases.
