Luciferase, enzyme manufactured in the cells of certain organisms to control bioluminescence. The widespread bioluminescence of such living organisms as fireflies, various marine organisms, and a number of algae, fungi, and bacteria is based on the oxidation of any of several organic molecules known as luciferins in the presence of the corresponding luciferase. The name comes from the Latin word lucifer, meaning "light-bearing."
