CCR6 encodes a receptor for the chemokine CCL20. It is predominantly expressed on immature dendritic cells, memory T cells, and B cells. CCR6 plays a crucial role in directing the migration of these immune cells to sites of inflammation or injury by responding to its ligand, CCL20. This chemokine-receptor interaction is vital for the development of organized lymphoid tissues and for mounting effective immune responses. Dysregulation of CCR6 has been implicated in various autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, highlighting its importance in maintaining immune system balance.
