IL22 is a cytokine that is produced by Th17 cells and plays a key role in tissue repair and defense against bacterial infections. It promotes the production of antimicrobial peptides and the regeneration of epithelial cells, especially in mucosal tissues such as the gut and skin. IL22 has a dual role in immune responses, supporting both protective and inflammatory effects. Dysregulated IL22 production can contribute to autoimmune diseases like psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), where it exacerbates inflammation and tissue damage.
