ITGAM encodes the alpha subunit of the integrin receptor complex Mac-1 (CD11b/CD18), which is crucial for immune cell adhesion and migration, particularly in neutrophils and macrophages. Mac-1 is involved in processes such as phagocytosis, immune cell signaling, and the response to infections. ITGAM plays a role in inflammation, particularly in autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Defective Mac-1 function due to ITGAM mutations can impair the immune system's ability to fight infections.
