Background
bphC, or Biphenyl-2,3-diol 1,2-dioxygenase, is an enzyme involved in the aerobic degradation of biphenyl and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by bacteria. It catalyzes the intradiol cleavage of biphenyl-2,3-diol, an intermediate, opening the aromatic ring. This reaction is a critical step in the bioremediation of these environmental pollutants.
