CD8A encodes the alpha chain of the CD8 glycoprotein, which is expressed on cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and functions as a co-receptor for the T cell receptor (TCR). CD8 helps T cells recognize and eliminate infected or cancerous cells by binding to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules on the surface of target cells. The CD8 co-receptor enhances T cell activation by stabilizing the interaction between the TCR and MHC class I, facilitating efficient immune responses. CD8A is involved in immune surveillance and cytotoxic activity against tumors and viral infections. CD8-positive T cells are essential for adaptive immunity, and CD8A is a critical determinant for cytotoxic T cell function.
