CD80, also known as B7-1, is a co-stimulatory molecule expressed on antigen-presenting cells (APCs) such as dendritic cells, macrophages, and B cells. It plays a crucial role in the activation of T cells by binding to its receptors, CD28 and CTLA-4, on T cells. The interaction with CD28 provides a signal that promotes T cell activation, while binding to CTLA-4 inhibits T cell responses, thus helping to maintain immune tolerance and prevent autoimmune reactions. CD80 is involved in regulating immune responses and is a key player in the initiation and control of immune responses, including both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses. It is also implicated in various diseases, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, and infections. CD80's role in immune modulation makes it an important target for therapeutic interventions, especially in cancer immunotherapy.
