CD4 is a key structure on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) receptor, and the W24OKT4 antibody can recognize different epitopes of CD4. Studies have shown that liposomes carrying photosensitizers and W24OKT4 antibodies can effectively kill T cell lines (such as CCRFCEM). Such liposomes have the potential to be used for targeted therapy in biomedical research.

- The W24OKT4 antibody specifically targets CD4, which is an approximately 59 kDa single-chain type I transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily. CD4 is characterized by four extracellular Ig-like domains (D1 - D4), and the epitope recognized by W24OKT4 has been pinpointed to the D3 domain, resembling the structure of an Ig variable domain. CD4 is predominantly expressed in high levels on most thymocytes and a subset of T cells, particularly T-helper cells, while it is present at lower levels on peripheral blood monocytes and macrophages. CD4 functions as a co-receptor for the T cell receptor (TCR) by binding to a non-polymorphic region of MHC class II molecules, significantly enhancing the affinity of the interaction between the TCR and the MHC II-antigen complex during MHC II-restricted antigen recognition.
